A CUP OF COMMON WEALTH

COFFEE CREW OF A CUP OF COMMON WEALTH: ALEXANDRA CANADA (PART 2 OF 2)

March 03, 2015  /  A Cup of Common Wealth

Below are the rest of the questions we asked the zany Alexandra Canada.  Check it out if you want to know what makes her tick-tock:

11) What advice would you give to your 50 year old self?

Always stay young at heart and don’t let age or season of life affect how much you laugh and have fun. Also, invest in those younger than you – they don’t have a clue what they’re doing just like you didn’t at their age, so choose to help them grow as often as you can.

12) If you could hang out with anyone, real or fictional, past or present - who it would be and why?

Probably Julianne Hough, because she’s beautiful and can dance like crazy. It would be during one of her family’s annual Thanksgiving or Christmas Dance Wars (I’m a shameless celebrity Instagram stalker), so that she could teach me how to dance.

13) What are you reading right now or plan on reading next?

I just recently started re-reading the Harry Potter series, because it’s incredible.

14) Where do you want to travel to next?

Everywhere! If I get to go to a place I’ve never been, I am so thrilled no matter where it is. But specifically right now, I have my sights set on visiting the western United States (Colorado, Texas, California), and then I hope to return to London one day and visit my friends that I haven’t seen in three years.

15) Describe one of the items on your bucket list.

I want to have stepped foot in all 50 states and 6 of the 7 continents (I’m not much of a fan of winter, so we’ll let Antarctica slide).

16) What do you do outside of work?

This is a loaded question since there’s a lot I love to do, but to name only a few: I love traveling and hanging out with my studmuffin of a husband, Andrew. I also enjoy videography and photography and have had a blast getting to channel my creativity through them. Hanging out with my friends, family, and coworkers will always be something that makes my heart happy, so I try to do that as often as I can.

17) If you could be a Superhero what would your name be? Your Powers? Your Supervillain?

Alexington O’Canada and I would fly, be able to do flips off of buildings, and beat my nemesis named Joey Rathbutt Willis.

18) Describe your perfect day.

I can think of so many days that would make me happy, but if I had to pick just one, I would be on vacation with my family at the North Carolina Outerbanks with a beach front house, flying a kite, and building sandcastles.  Just hanging out in the summer sun with people I love.

19) In a perfect world - what would you be doing, where would you be living, what would life be like?

It’s hard for me to pick what my perfect world would look like, because I am easily contented and there are so many different things that get me excited. I have always wanted to live somewhere with a view, whether that’s of mountains, the ocean, a city…I would definitely be working in an industry where I get to come in contact with lots of people on a daily basis and where those relationships would build into strong friendships. I would also be making a decent amount of money for the sole purpose of being able to hop on a place or take a road trip to visit family and friends and see parts of the world I have yet to see. Or, maybe I’ll just learn how to fly. That would actually, probably be even more fun.

20) What makes you fun?

No moment ever has to be dull. It’s easy to get stressed and frustrated and I definitely have those moments, but if you’re bored or having a hard time with something, find some way to make it fun and enjoyable. I laugh ALL the time – ask any of my coworkers and close friends. I get overly excited about pretty much everything and maybe some people see it as over the top from time to time, but it makes life a lot more fun. I try not to let little things get to me and I make sure to go crazy once in awhile…or all the time.

21) If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

Macaroni and Cheese. Preferably from Limestone Blue on a Friday (Grippose Mac and Cheese for the win!), but really from anywhere is delish too.

22) How do you unwind from a stressful day?

Beer and my husband. Sometimes, we watch movies or play Mario Kart; sometimes, we take walks; sometimes, we just read.  Whatever ends up happening it’s always the best way to end my day.

23) What's your philosophy on life?

We were never created to live for ourselves. We should take care of ourselves, but turn the focus toward others. So, serve people around you daily, seek to better yourself so that you can invest in people later, let generosity trump logic and reason, learn as much as you can, and unconditionally love and show your love to those you hold dear.

24) What makes you genuinely happy (when you can't help but smile at it)?

The warmth of feeling like you have a family relationship. Whether that’s with actual family, friends, or coworkers – being a part of a “family,” much like our big, old coffee family – makes me extremely happy.

25) What's your greatest accomplishment?

I think one of the coolest things that happened to me was during my senior year of college. At Asbury, they hold the Highbridge Film Festival every year. I had gone to it each time and always wished that I could be good enough to get a film in. It’s a pretty competitive process and no one ever really knows what the judges are specifically looking for…and, I’m pretty hard on myself when it comes to skill with videography. But, that New Year’s Eve (2013), I made the resolution that I would submit a film. If I didn’t make it, that would be okay, but I would submit one for sure. I ended up submitting three and the one I was most proud of made it in. I was able to be a VIP and get an all access pass to see my film play in Hughes Auditorium in front of the whole school. I was extremely proud and happy to have followed through with my New Year’s Resolution.

26) What is one of the most valuable lessons you have learned?

Give up things that you love for things you love even more. It’s a daily lesson of fighting certain tendencies, laziness, fear, comfort, apathy, and selfishness. This pertains to my faith, my work, my relationships, and just daily living.

27) What’s something you would like to do over again?

I don’t really regret much, but I would definitely go with the age-old try better in school. I really do wish I could have at least been fluent in another language or exceedingly knowledgeable about something in school.

28) What's your go-to entertainment right now?

I really love game nights with friends. This can mean board games or card games, or good old Mario Kart on Nintendo 64 or Game Cube.

29) Who are some of your mentors and why?

There are so many people who have invested a great deal in my life and I could go on and on about all of them. But to pick just one, it would have to be my dear friend, Abby Laub. I lived with her, her husband, and daughter for about four months before I got married and we have all stayed very good friends ever since. Abby is such a beautiful example of what it’s like to be an excellent, godly wife and mother, while still following her dreams by excelling in her profession (photography and journalism), and kicking ass in the gym on a weekly, and sometimes, daily basis. This woman needs to have a blog devoted to how awesome she is. She’s taught me so much about how to be a classy woman and a loving wife, and someday, hopefully, a great parent.

30) How do you stay informed with everything that is going on in the coffee industry?

Ever since I started working at A Cup of Common Wealth, I have begun to form a big interest about what I’m creating, serving, and consuming when it comes to coffee. I get most of my information from Salvador, Joseph, and Jeffrey and love to do a coffee taste test whenever possible.

COFFEE CREW OF A CUP OF COMMON WEALTH: ALEXANDRA CANADA (PART 1 OF 2)

February 21, 2015  /  A Cup of Common Wealth

Alexandra the Great!

Alexandra the Great!

Alex was born in good old Greenwich, Ohio - a tiny town, right between Columbus and Cleveland, with a population of 1500. She’s the youngest of four children and has nine wonderful nieces and nephews with a 10th coming in May. Growing up, she played for hours outside, pretending she was an adventurer exploring different countries and worlds to which she had never been.

In high school, Alex took a class in Video Production, which sparked her love for media, videography, and photography. Early on she decided to move down to Kentucky after graduating, to major in Media Communications at Asbury University.

While in college, Alex met this random hot guy named Andrew Canada who turned out to be the one person, who unconditionally puts up with her crazy, extreme “extrovertedness” and loves her in spite of it.

They got hitched in October of 2013 and moved to downtown Lexington.

Alex has always had a love for pretty much all things happiness (basically anything that Joe and Sal hate), but she has an intense love for summertime and Christmastime. During the Christmas season you’ll find Alex putting Christmas decorations up wherever she can. She watches ‘The Grinch,’ ‘White Christmas,’ and ‘Scrooge - the Musical’ multiple times every year. In the summer, you can guarantee she’ll do whatever she can do to be outside swimming, hiking, or just sitting in the sun.

Alex started working at A Cup of Common Wealth in May of 2014 and has loved every minute of the coffee slinging, the marker wars, the whipped cream fights, the dancing and singing, the connections with customers, and the relationships with the awesome baristas that have formed into a close knit community and family.

And now, the first ten wonderful questions for Alexandra --- check it out below:

1) What drew you to the coffee industry?

Hands down – the community. I have always loved being around people and making them smile while waiting on them or serving them in some way. Working with coffee is just such a natural way to serve and get to know people on a one-on-one basis, while also drinking pure bliss.

Obviously, extremely shy.  Not a people-person at all.

Obviously, extremely shy.  Not a people-person at all.

2) Why A Cup of Common Wealth?

I heard so much about A Cup of Common Wealth for months and loved absolutely everything they were about.  When I was looking for a job, it popped into my head. I went to the website and read every page top to bottom. I fell in love with the mission, the focus on community, the pay it forwards…everything. I wanted very much to be a part of it all.

3) What's your favorite coffee drink and why?

As a former Vanilla Latte (extra vanilla lover), I never thought I would ever say this, but if I can just get an Aeropress or V60 pourover of a good Ethiopian coffee (particularly Coava’s Kilenso) I will be so incredibly happy. Nothing added. Just fruity goodness. If I’m feeling chocolate though, the best mocha I’ve ever had is a Mocha Del Sol.

4) What's your favorite non-coffee drink and why?

My parents lived in England for awhile and picked up the love for tea there, so growing up tea was consumed more often than coffee. London Fogs are great for something sweet and milky, but sometimes just straight black or green tea is so delicious.

5) What's your favorite part of being a barista?

Again, the people.  From the awesome customers, whom I call friends to my incredible coworkers, whom I call family, I love every bit about the community of my job. I love going to work, being greeted by a half dozen or so people I love, and then having a shift full of laughter and craziness all while getting to know people on a deeper level. It’s my favorite.

6) What is one of your guilty pleasures?

On more than one occasion when I was cleaning my house (and I really actually WAS cleaning) I watched almost an entire season of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ on Netflix. And, I loved every minute of it.

7) When is the last time you broke a rule and what was it?

Most likely going 10 or so miles over the speed limit (Sorry, Officer Farley).

8) What's something about yourself that you wish more people knew about you?

I have played the violin since the second grade and won a Concerto competition my senior year of high school with it. I don’t play as much as I used to, but I love to whip it out every now and then.

9) What's your favorite holiday?

Uhhh Duh.  Christmas.  With. Every. Fiber. Of. My. Being. I could write a book on why I love Christmas and why you should too J

10) What advice would you give to your 10 year old self?

Do NOT worry about what other people think about you, because they really don’t matter. Your integrity and love toward others is what matters. Work hard, and really try to truly learn things, so that later on they will benefit you and those around you.

COFFEE CREW OF A CUP OF COMMON WEALTH: ZACH JOSEPH (PART 2 OF 2)

January 28, 2015  /  A Cup of Common Wealth

Zachary - still rocking' the bandana

Zachary - still rocking' the bandana

More insightful stuff from Zachy.  Below are the rest of the questions we asked Mr. Zachary Joseph to help you all get to know him a bit better:

11) What advice would you give to your 50 year old self?

If you don’t have hair anymore, find a way to grow some again.  Also, try to teleport a hoverboard to your 20 year old self; so he can fly around Lexington and freak people out.

12) If you could hang out with anyone, real or fictional, past or present - who it would be and why?

I would love to hang out with Dan Aurbach of the Black Keys.  He has one of my favorite guitar tones, and he’s one of my biggest musical inspirations.  I think he even owns part of a coffee shop in Nashville!

13) What are you reading right now or plan on reading next?

I’m planning on reading "I, Robot" by Isaac Asimov.  It’s about time for me to have some more Sci-Fi in my life, and I loved his book, "Foundation."

14) Where do you want to travel to next?

I would love to go back to Europe - this time maybe France or England.  I just love the old buildings/castles that have been around for hundreds of years.  That kind of architecture is just so beautiful.

15) Describe one of the items on your bucket list.

I want to sky dive sooooo badly.  The problem is that I have a slight fear of heights from time to time, which makes that wish a little difficult to fulfill.  But, it’ll happen one day!

16) What do you do outside of work?

I love to hang out with friends, watch Netflix, play music, and read -- with an emphasis on the Netflix.  I tear through TV series when I get the chance.

17) If you could be a Superhero what would your name be? Your Powers? Your Supervillain?

I would be Mind-Slinger, the barista with telekinesis.  I would use my powers to make hundreds of drinks at once, all to combat the evil villainess – Lady Canada (formerly known as Alex Canada).

18) Describe your perfect day.

Somewhere with a beautiful view, reading and playing guitar for most of the day.  Maybe eating some awesome ice-cream after a hike or swim around the wonderful landscape.

19) In a perfect world - what would you be doing, where would you be living, what would life be like?

I would definitely be doing something associated with music, whether that be playing it or maybe selling/making guitars.  At the same time, I would definitely want to have a family as well; preferably, someplace where the weather is always nice, my schedule is never rushed, and ice-cream is always free.

He sure does love guitars

20) What makes you fun?

The way I’ll just act completely stupid/funny once I get to know someone.  I’m usually pretty hesitant at first, but after I know you for some time I’m not afraid to be a little ridiculous.

21) If you could only have one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

BnT Jambalaya.  Every day.  For the rest of my life.

22) How do you unwind from a stressful day?

Relaxing on the couch with some Netflix, comic books, or books that will make me pretty zen.

23) What's your philosophy on life?

You can be a little stupid, but never act completely stupid.

24) What makes you genuinely happy (when you can't help but smile at it)?

It’s probably getting a little repetitive at this point, but when I’m playing/listening to music in a group setting.  There’s a certain connection that forms when music and people are involved, and not many other things give me that same connection.

25) What's your greatest accomplishment?

Meeting Alex Canada.

26) What is one of the most valuable lessons you have learned?

That if you’re ever going to be the person you want to eventually be, you’re going to have to be uncomfortable/unsure with some of the decisions you make on the way.

27) What’s something you would like to do over again?

Travel to Germany!  Those five weeks were so amazing; it was some of the most relaxing and adventurous days I’ve ever had.

28) What's your go-to entertainment right now?

Watching “Portlandia.”  Reading “Black Science” by Rick Remender (comic book).  Listening to St. Vincent.

29) Who are some of your mentors and why?

Definitely the leaders in my church/campus ministry.  I really enjoy following in the footsteps of those who are grounded in their faith and beliefs.  Also, anyone who is very organized in their schedule and activities.  That’s one area that I’m always willing to grow in.

30) How do you stay informed with everything that is going on in the coffee industry?

JoeBro is my main go-to guy for all things coffee.  But, I also love coming into the shop and making/trying the new coffees as soon as we get them.  It’s fun to read and learn about coffee, but firsthand experience with the beans is an experience you can’t replace.
